The University Institute of Technology, Alappuzha Regional Centre was established in 1995 by the University of Kerala with a view to train the students for employment in Research and Development Institutions, Business Organisations, Industries and for self-employment. There are ten centers under University of Kerala atAlappuzha, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Trivandrum
Alappuzha is one of the thickly populated area with huge backlog of educated unemployment. The District is noted for production of coir and several products produced out of coir. Major portion of the Coir products are exported to foreign countries. The District has a significant place in the tourism map of Kerala also. So there is much scope for introducing career oriented programmes along with Degree level education.
The performance of this regional center has been satisfactory. The Expert Committee appointed by the University in 2003 with the former Vice Chancellor Dr. Ramachandran Nair as Chairman has expressed satisfaction over the working of this center. The Committee has remarked that “the center deserves all encouragements, as a model to other centers.With adequate facility augmentation done, UIT Alappuzha is all set to upgraded into a P.G Institution”.
